Mason Spirit Abounds During Welcome Week
By Frances Womble
For students new to campus looking to show off their school affiliation or returning students needing to freshen up their wardrobes, the George Mason University bookstore is ramping up for spirit shoppers. Regardless of whether bookstore visitors are new students, established students, or their family members, trending clothing and apparel are popular items.
“Barnes and Noble does research in order to stock silhouettes that are trendy,” says Barb Headley, general manager of the bookstore. “A lot of ladies clothing isn’t the traditional T-shirt anymore, and students respond to the new cuts.”
Although the majority of clothing items are found in green and gold, other colors can be found advertising Mason.
“Bright neon colors are very big right now,” says Headley. “Some of the fashion colors surprise me, but they are always big sellers.”
As new students move onto campus, Mason items are big sellers for family members.
“New students are definitely looking for things that say ‘mom,’ ‘dad,’ and ‘grandparent’ because they’re proud,” says Headley. “They want to dress the whole family.”
College Colors Day
Almost immediately after students get settled on campus, they’ll have a prime opportunity to show off their new Mason gear. National College Colors Day will be celebrated on Friday, August 30. It’s a special time when students and alumni across the country show their spirit by dressing in their schools’ colors.
Wear your gear and go to the following Mason locations on August 30 between noon and 2 p.m. to show off your school spirit, take photos, and meet other Patriots.
- Arlington Campus – Founders Hall
- Fairfax Campus – North Plaza
- Prince William Campus – Bull Run Hall
Mason members wearing Mason gear may post photos daily in August on www.facebook.com/WeAreMason and www.twitter.com/WeAreMason4Life using #WeAreMason for a chance to win prizes, Mason gear, and the title of College Colors Fan of the Day.
Following College Colors Day, the Mason community is encouraged to continue the tradition each Friday by wearing Mason gear at work, at school, or at play to show Patriot pride.
“I think it has a great impact on the university,” says Headley. “On Fridays, there’s nothing but a sea of green and gold. It’s amazing to see.”
Mason gear can also be purchased at local retail outlets and online. See trademarks.gmu.edu/gear or www.pinterest.com/WeAreMason to get ready for the competition, College Colors Day, and Spirit Fridays.
